1. The Nature of Jyotish

Jyotish — Vedic astrology — is one of the oldest systems of knowledge in human civilisation, with roots stretching back more than 5,000 years. It is a profound tradition that has guided millions of families across South Asia and the wider world in understanding personality, timing, and compatibility.

Guna Milan, the 8-Kuta compatibility system used by VedicMatching, has been practised by Jyotish astrologers for centuries as a framework for assessing the auspiciousness of a proposed union. It is a cultural and spiritual practice, not a scientific methodology.

2. What Our Calculations Represent

VedicMatching calculates Guna Milan scores using the following inputs and methods:

• Moon Nakshatra — derived from the Moon's sidereal longitude at the time and place of birth, calculated using the Jean Meeus astronomical algorithm and Lahiri Ayanamsa
• 8 Kutas — Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot, and Nadi — assessed according to classical Jyotish rules
• Dosha identification — Nadi Dosha, Bhakoot Dosha, and Gana Dosha flagged where applicable

Our calculations aim to faithfully represent the traditional Ashtakoota system. However, different schools of Jyotish apply these rules differently. Traditional astrologers may weight, interpret, or apply exceptions to these rules in ways that differ from our automated calculations.

3. Limitations You Must Understand

Before acting on any result from VedicMatching, please understand the following limitations:

• Birth time accuracy is critical. Guna Milan depends on the Moon's Nakshatra, which can change every two to three days. An incorrect birth time of even a few hours may produce a different Nakshatra and therefore a completely different score. If you do not know the exact time of birth, results should be treated as approximate.
• Guna Milan is one part of a full Kundli analysis. Traditional astrologers consider many additional factors — planetary positions, dashas, the full natal chart, divisional charts, and family charts — before advising on a match. Guna Milan alone is not a complete assessment.
• Dosha cancellations and exceptions. Classical texts describe numerous conditions under which Doshas (such as Nadi Dosha) can be cancelled or mitigated. Our automated system does not apply all possible cancellation rules. A human astrologer may reach a different conclusion.
• No scientific validation. Vedic astrology has not been validated by controlled scientific studies as a predictor of relationship success. A high Guna score does not guarantee a happy marriage, and a low score does not preclude one.
• Cultural context. Guna Milan was developed within specific cultural, social, and historical contexts. Its application may be more or less relevant depending on your background, values, and circumstances.

4. What You Should Do With Our Results

We recommend treating VedicMatching's analysis as a starting point for reflection, not a final verdict. Specifically:

• Consult a qualified Jyotishi before making any significant decision about a relationship based on astrological compatibility
• Consider the whole person — values, character, communication, shared goals, and mutual respect are at least as important as astrological alignment
• Involve your family and trusted advisors in any significant matchmaking process
• Do not reject a potentially good match solely because of a low Guna score, nor accept a poor match solely because of a high one

5. No Professional Relationship

Using VedicMatching does not create a professional relationship of any kind — astrological, advisory, counselling, legal, or otherwise — between you and VedicMatching or any of its operators.

We are a technology platform that automates traditional astrological calculations. We are not astrologers, counsellors, matchmakers, or relationship advisors.

6. Accuracy of Astronomical Calculations

Moon positions are calculated using the Jean Meeus simplified lunar algorithm with Lahiri Ayanamsa. This method is accurate to approximately ±0.5 degrees of longitude for dates within a few centuries of the present. For the purposes of Nakshatra determination — which requires assigning the Moon to one of 27 segments of approximately 13.33 degrees each — this accuracy is generally sufficient.

However, if the Moon is near the boundary between two Nakshatras (within approximately 0.5 degrees), there is a possibility that our calculation places it in the adjacent Nakshatra from where a more precise ephemeris would place it. In such cases, we recommend verifying with a professional astrologer using Swiss Ephemeris or similar precision tools.

7. No Warranty

VedicMatching provides its astrological analyses "as is" without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to any warranty of accuracy, completeness, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement.

We make no representation that our Guna Milan scores will match those produced by any other software, website, or human astrologer. Differences in interpretation of classical rules, Ayanamsa selection, and calculation methods mean that results may legitimately vary between sources.
